Academic Learning Support

What is academic learning support?

1. Outline

provision of scholarships is considered academic learning support in the sense that it helps students to study at a university. However, the term here refers to support for academic difficulties caused by a disability or support for students who face obstacles in their studies due to social barriers.

2. Relation with reasonable accommodation

Academic learning support is also sometimes used interchangeably with reasonable accommodations. However, reasonable accommodation is an exercise of a legally established right for students and an arrangement or change that universities are obligated to provide. Academic learning support can rather refer to a wide variety of support that encompasses such reasonable accommodations.

3. Content

There are two types of specifics: reasonable accommodations and other types of support. Reasonable accommodation has a certain scope. For example, the use of a study space is not an individual modification or adjustment but rather an environmental improvement. Learning how to organize documents, for example, does not constitute a reasonable accommodation. The same applies to support for deepening self-understanding and helping students to choose a learning style that suits them best.

Other types of support for study other than these reasonable accommodations include the following.
